Ten Books I’d Want With Me While Stranded On a Deserted Island

I'm weird, so sometimes I think about things I would like to have with me if I were on a deserted island. These are my picks.

  1. The SAS Survival Handbook: For Any Climate, in Any Situation, by John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman. This is “the definitive guide to survive in the wild, in any climate, on land or at sea. For over twenty years, the SAS Survival Guide has been the definitive guide to surviving any situation, anywhere in the world.” I think I need this handy-dandy book if I intend to live, because this city girl knows next to nothing about surviving in the wild.
  2. How to Survive on a Deserted Island, by Tim O'Shei and Al Siebert. Another survival book, just to be on the safe side, that explains how to find drinkable water, catch food, and signal rescuers …
  3. The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building Life-saving Structures for Every Climate and Wilderness Situation, by Anthonio Akkermans. How the heck do you build a shelter on a deserted island? Reading this book can help with that.
  4. The World Book Encyclopedia. It can be a substitute for the Internet, I guess, since it contains articles with basic overviews on various topics. Plus, it’s HUGE! I can use some of the pages as tinder, if I have to, and not feel too bad about it. *shrugs*
  5. East of Eden, by John Steinbeck.
  6. The Short Novels of John Steinbeck. Six of John Steinbeck's most widely read and beloved novels compiled in one fat book.
  7. The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, by Bill Watterson.
  8. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis.
  9. The Bible. It has many genres, it's inspirational, encouraging, and has answers to life’s philosophical questions.
  10. A blank journal with about 500 pages, so I could document my adventures and record my emotions until I’m rescued!
Yes, I know, #4 and #7 may be considered cheating because they are boxed sets, but did you really think I could narrow it down to only ten books?

  1. Oh, yes, the World Book Encyclopedia. And we'd count that as one book, right?

  9. The complete Calvin and Hobbs is inspired. I wish I had thought of that. It's perfect entertainment and never gets old. You have a very thoughtful list here.

  10. Great list! I'd definitely want all those survival ones as well as I have zero skills in that area. Scriptures and a journal are great picks as well.

    Happy TTT!

  14. I was thinking about a big fat tome with a whole series published as "one" book too! That would definitely keep you busy for a bit!

  15. All of you who put survival books and books you could use as to burn are smart, lol!! I just don't think like that. I love the idea of a blank notebook too. Thanks for sharing!

  17. Hahaha, I love it. I couldn't narrow it down to ten single books, either. Had to include some series/trilogies. LOL

  18. You definitely took the smarter route - books that would help you! I, on the other hand, would eventually die because all I brought were books I love and are comforting. So I would at least be comfortable when I died.

  19. I think I would like your list of books with me for a deserted island. Is there a 'Surviving for dummies' book that condense everything because I don't think I have the patience to read all these how to books plus I might be in panic mode after being stranded which makes it hard to read anything.

The only one on your list that I read is #8 - It's a good book but kind of short but maybe that's good because with all the survival books to read, you probably won't have time to read anything else.

Blank journal is great but 500 pages is too low a number for me since I'm kind of a sloppy writer.

    Great list!

    Have a lovely day.
